“Excuse me, Agent Bauer?” A man said. Jack pulled away from Audrey. The man was of average height, had dark hair and obviously had oriental roots, but was definitely American. “We have your daughter on the line.”
“My daughter?” Jack replied, genuinely surprised that his daughter had contacted him – only a few hours ago she had said that she never wanted to see him again.
“A Kim Bauer?” said the man. “We’ve patched it through to a local landline, just inside those doors,” he said, pointing to the bleak grey building beside them. Jack told Audrey of his love for her, and then whispered, “I’ll be right back.” Those fatal words that would never be true.
He strolled through the doors of the building. Almost instantly he spotted the black phone on the wall. He picked up the receiver.
“Hey, Kim?” he started, longing desperately for his daughter to review her decision – to tell him she loved him; that she had made a mistake. Suddenly a man all in black jumped him from behind. A cloth was thrust in front of his mouth. Jack could smell morphine. Another man, dressed the same ran round the corner. Jack pushed him away with his feet. He desperately stared at Audrey through the window as he struggled to escape his assailant’s grasp. She could not see what was happening to him, nor hear his muffled cries for help. But then everything went black and he slumped were he stood. Then he was dragged away by his masked attackers…

A while later, Audrey entered the building.
“Jack?” she called. She spotted the receiver hanging down by the phone – but where was Jack? “Oh my G-d,” she whispered. She ran from the building and sprinted down the steps. “Agent Davis, Jack Bauer is missing!” she cried.
“We have a missing agent, Jack Bauer. I repeat we have a missing agent, Jack Bauer,” Davis shouted into his walkie-talkie. Audrey ran her fingers through her hair, desperately scanning the area for any sign of her beloved Jack.

Meanwhile, on a boat somewhere, Jack was hurt. The men who had attacked him were dragging him along the floor. Two armed men walked behind them. They all wore balaclavas. Jack’s top had been removed; a thin jacket framed his weak body. His feet trailed behind him. His face was covered in blood. He couldn’t open his right eye; it was too swollen. The men took him to the middle of the floor and dropped him there. He stayed down, too enervated to get up. They took off their balaclavas. Two other men walked towards him. One of the armed men grabbed Jack’s hair and pulled him to face the men approaching him. One of these men came close to Jack.
“You surely must be aware, Mr. Bauer, that China has a long memory.” He had a distinct Chinese accent. It was Cheng Zhi, the Chinese security officer. Jack looked up. All the men in the room were Chinese. “Only eighteen months ago, you invaded our territory and killed our consul.” He bent down and looked Jack in the eye. “Did you really think we would forget?” Jack swallowed hard.
“I know how this works,” he groaned. “I need to make one phone call.” Cheng Zhi said nothing. “Please, just one phone call.” Still the man was silent. Jack looked at him and spat at his feet. Cheng Zhi turned away in disgust. The man holding him slung him to the floor.
“Kill me,” he whispered. “Just kill me…” he glanced up at Cheng Zhi, blood dripping from his mouth.
“Kill you?” he smirked. “You’re far too valuable to kill, Mr. Bauer.” Jack rolled onto his back, leaving a small pool of scarlet blood on the floor. And as Cheng Zhi walked away, the Chinese closed in on Jack, sealing his doom…
